What are the benefits of being an active filer (FBR filer)?

What documents are required to file an income tax return?

For individuals:

  • CNIC
  • Salary certificate or income details
  • Bank statement
  • Property or vehicle documents (if applicable)
  • Utility bills (if business is registered)
  • Some others depending upon particular case.
Can I file my return myself or do I need a tax consultant?

You can file yourself, but most people prefer a tax consultant to ensure proper filing, avoid errors and penalties, and maximize benefits. Consultant also helps you to avoid complications.

For Overseas Pakistanis

I’m a non-resident. Do I still submit income tax file in Pakistan?
  • Yes, if you want to be an active filer and avail its benefits in Pakistan.

I don't have any income in Pakistan. Do I still have to pay any tax?

Yes, if you want to be an active filer and avail its benefits in Pakistan.

How do I become an FBR active filer while living abroad?

Yes, you can submit your income tax file and attain active filer status while living abroad. You don’t need to be physically here for submission of your tax file.

NTN & Registration

How do I get an NTN number?
  • Once your registration with FBR is completed, your NTN is generated automatically. We offer free NTN registration with our tax services.

Is NTN registration free or paid?

With us, it's completely free as part of your income tax filing package.

How long does it take to get registered with FBR?

Usually within hours. But submission of income tax file may take some time it depends on how quickly information provided by tax payer.

Can I check my NTN or filer status online?

Yes, you can check it on the FBR website using your CNIC number.

Tax Deductions & Exemptions

What expenses can I legally claim to reduce my tax liability?
  • You can claim expenses like:

    • Zakat
    • Donations to approved organizations
    • Education expenses
    • Medical insurance
    • House rent (in some cases)
Are Zakat, donations, or education expenses deductible?

Yes, if they are paid to recognized institutions and you have receipts.

Is there any tax exemption for freelancers or online earners?

Freelancers are taxed under normal business income rules. However, income in foreign currency through proper channels may be exempt in certain cases or charged at 1%, for filer under export of services, if declared properly.

Late Filing & Penalties

What happens if I file my return after the deadline?
  • Individuals will need to pay a late filing penalty of Rs. 1,000. Companies will pay PKR 20,000

What is the penalty for late filing or non-filing?

Minimum Rs. 1,000 for individuals. Penalties can increase based on registration status for companies it is PKR 20,000 and for association of person it is only PKR 10,000

Can I still become a filer after the deadline?

Yes, you can file late and still become a filer by paying the late filing fees.

Freelancers, Business Owners, and Property Holders

I earn through freelancing (Upwork, Fiverr). Do I need to file taxes?
  • Yes, freelancers must declare their income and file returns. Proper filing helps you avoid penalties and claim exemptions.

What is the tax rate for rental income or business income?

Rates vary based on total income.

I own property. Do I need to declare it?

It depends upon your resident status. (local or overseas)

How is tax calculated for small businesses or sole proprietors?

Tax is calculated on net profit after expenses. Books of accounts or simple income/expense records are required.

Do I need to register for sales tax as well?

Only if you’re selling taxable goods/services above the threshold limit or doing business in a sales tax-applicable sector.

After Filing

How long does it take to appear in the Active Taxpayer List (ATL)?
  • Usually it does not take much time after filing and payment of government fee.

Will I get confirmation from FBR after return filing?

Yes, you will receive a confirmation email and downloadable receipt from FBR.

How can I verify that my return has been successfully submitted?

Usually you are notified through an email. Otherwise you can also check Section 120 order for confirmation.
